Thorny Devil, Eurycantha calcarata

These stalky stick insects are native to New Guinea, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands. Males of this species have a large curved thorn on the underside of their hindleg, which has historically been used as a fish hook in New Guinea. These insects are nocturnal plant eaters. During the day they like to congregate together in a hiding spot safe from predators.
