Meet Our Axolotls: Flutter & Freckles
Flutter and Freckles are the stars of our brand-new axolotl exhibit at Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge, Ontario. These fascinating aquatic amphibians are now on display in a custom-designed habitat where families can observe them up close.
Our axolotl exhibit is included with general admission and is one of the most unique indoor attractions in Waterloo Region.

What Is an Axolotl?
Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are fully aquatic salamanders known for their feathery external gills, wide eyes, and remarkable ability to regenerate limbs and internal organs. Unlike most amphibians, axolotls do not transition to life on land. They remain in their larval form for their entire lives — a trait called neoteny.
In the wild, axolotls are critically endangered and are native to a single lake system in Mexico. Visiting our axolotl exhibit gives families a rare opportunity to learn about this extraordinary species and the importance of conservation.
