Burmese Fish Tail Palm, Caryota mitis

FAMILY:
Arecaceae

ORIGIN:
Indonesia

DESCRIPTION:
Fish-tailed shaped leaflets on a clump-forming tree growing up to 30 ft.

CULTIVATION:
Regular abundant watering; bright, filtered light

PROPAGATION:
Sow seed in spring

COMMENTS:
This palm is a staple in villages where every part of the plant is useful (palm heart is eaten, leaf sheath is used for making rope, starch is extracted from the stem); the clumps of colourful seed pods should be avoided as they may be toxic
