Flight of White

It is with sadness that we announce the decision to end our Flight of White exhibit early this year.

We work with butterfly farmers in the Philippines to supply us with the Rice Paper butterflies that are featured in this annual holiday exhibit. Sadly, the Philippines has recently experienced extreme weather that has resulted in country-wide devastation and the number of Rice Paper butterflies that we are able to import has been drastically reduced. Thankfully, we have been in contact with our butterfly farmers on the island province of Marinduque and we are comforted to know they are safe.

Our regular butterfly shipments from Costa Rica are unaffected and visitors can still expect a memorable experience when visiting the Conservatory this January. Join our staff in the Conservatory for hourly butterfly releases and one-on-one insect encounters. Winter Activities for Kids will continue through to the end of January.

We thank you in advance for your understanding.

This truly unique holiday exhibit transforms the tropical butterfly conservatory into a magical oasis featuring 1000’s of additional Rice Paper butterflies flying freely through the Conservatory. With a wingspan of up to 14cm, the Rice Paper Butterfly, a large white relative of the Monarch, is impossible to miss as it floats through the air moving gently from flower to flower. The Flight of White experience also includes lush white poinsettia flowers, 1000’s of sparkling white lights, and soft strains of classical music playing in the background.

“The Rice Paper butterfly is a favourite for our guests because they land on visitors the most” says Adrienne Brewster, executive director and curator at the Conservatory.“As visitors stroll through the exhibit they will encounter fascinating information about the Rice Paper’s behaviour and biology. This exhibit is a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of holiday activities”.

Flight of White is included with paid admission.
